A informação foi confirmada oficialmente pela atriz através de sua página do Instagram: Dobrev se despede da produção após o final do sexto ano. Além disso, Julie Plec, produtora da série, também revelou que Michael Trevino não fará mais parte do elenco regular.Plec afirmou: “Dizer adeus a Nina é tanto agridoce quanto bonito. Após mais de seis anos juntos, todo o elenco e equipe de Vampire Diaries atingiu um nível de proximidade que nenhum de nós esperávamos. Nina está empolgada em abrir as asas, descansar um pouco, viajar o mundo e conquistá-lo, algo que nós apoiamos. Sentiremos falta dela e dos 400 personagens que ela interpretou, ao mesmo tempo em que estamos empolgados com o desafio insano e fascinante de continuar a contar as histórias dos nossos irmãos Salvatore e do amado e talentoso elenco que nos acompanha”.
Sobre Trevino, a declaração de Plec foi a seguinte: “Michael sempre foi um adorado membro da família Vampire Diaries desde o primeiro dia. Apesar de estar também seguindo para o mundo a fim de explorar novas oportunidades, estamos ansiosos para encontrar meios criativos de ter certeza de que ele e seu personagem, Tyler Lockwood, sempre façam parte do show”.

"I've just spent the most beautiful weekend on Lake Lanier in Georgia with my own TVD Family, the cast and crew of The Vampire Diaries. I want to be the first to tell you that it wasn't just a holiday celebration, it was a goodbye party. I always knew I wanted Elena's story to be a six season adventure, and within those six years I got the journey of a lifetime. I was a human, a vampire, a doppelganger, a crazy immortal, a doppelganger pretending to be human, a human pretending to be a doppelganger. I got kidnapped, killed, resurrected, tortured, cursed, body-snatched, was dead and undead, and there's still so much more to come before the season finale in May. Elena fell in love not once, but twice, with two epic soulmates, and I myself made some of the best friends I'll ever know and built an extended family I will love forever.
